Research Experience: Equatorial Pacific Dolphin Abundance Study
Project Website - http://swfsc.noaa.gov/prd-star-lite.aspx
Research Objectives: To investigate the variability in the cetacean, ecological, and oceanographic sampling in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP). Data on cetacean distribution, school size, and school composition will be collected from the R/V McARTHUR II and small boats to determine dolphin abundance. Oceanographic data are collected to characterize habitat and its variation over time. Data on distribution and abundance of seabirds, flying fish, and marine turtles will further characterize the ecosystem. Skin biopsies of cetaceans provide a database for investigations of stock structure and phylogenic relationships.
