Nutrition Expedition
An Investigation of Nutritional Requirements under Extreme Conditions

Hook
Pretend to be on a ski expedition across Antarctica. Choose your teammates of no more than 2-4 students to be on this expedition with you. You are going to ski 1,500 km. to the South Pole Station in good weather conditions in ~48 days. You will plan a nutritionally correct menu for your body weight and nutritional requirements for surviving such an expedition.

Materials

  • Stop watch or clock
  • Bathroom scale
  • Calculators
  • Computers with internet access
  • Poster paper and colored markers for presentations, optional
  • Block of cheese, peanut butter, trail mix, dried fruit, granola bars, power bars, pop tarts, marshmallows
  • Food scale

    Procedure
    You will investigate nutritional requirements for intense physical exercise under extremely cold conditions. Determine your body weight and the types and amounts of foods required each day under the extreme conditions of cold and exercise. Use the Internet to make contact with one past and/or present expedition to ask about its daily nutritional requirements and types of foods consumed. Your team will form a panel to present your findings to the class. Each team member will present a part of your team's findings. Your team will explain what happened and why. You will talk about your planning process and the outcomes of your project. Optional: visual aid such as a poster or chart.
