Overview
This activity has several parts:

Part 1: Acquiring a representative sampling.
Part 2: Using the sampling strategy to collect temperature data; organizing, mapping, analyzing, and displaying those data.
Part 3: Extending the student's understanding to interpretations of Arctic data and predictions for future thaw.

The goals of these activities include:

  • A look at the scientific method
  • Student driven experimental design
  • Field data collection
  • Analysis of field data
  • Mapping
  • Graphing
  • Grade Level/Discipline
I use portions of this activity series in my chemistry, physics, biology, and advanced placement biology. Grades 9-12

    National Standards
The parts of this activity encompass several standards:

  • Standard A Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry
  • Standard B Interactions of energy and matter
  • Standard C Matter, energy, and orginization in living systems
  • Standard D Energy in the earth system
  • Standard E Understandings about science and technology
  • Standard F Natural resources; Environmental quality; Natural and human-induced hazards; Science and technology in local, national, and global challenges
  • Standard G Science as a human endeavor; Nature of scientific knowledge

    Time Frame

  • Part 1: 1 day introduction; 1 day data collection and analysis; 1 day discussion
  • Part 2: 1 day introduction; 1 to 2 days data collection; 1-3 days analysis and discussion
  • Part 3: 2-3 days analysis and discussion

Engagement and Exploration (Student Inquiry Activity

    Explanation (Discussing)

    Elaboration (Polar Applications)

    Exchange (Students Draw Conclusions)

    Evaluation (Assessing Student Performance)
I require my students to write a lab report that includes the following: Title, Purpose/Hypothesis, materials, procedure, data tables, analysis of data, error analysis, and conclusion.
