Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members
Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants:
I attended the Lunar and Planetary Conference in Houston, TX March 13-18, 2004. I was able to attend and parcticipate in a session on the use of NASA data and making it available to teachers. I also attended several sessions and was able to re-unite with my team members. Dr. Nancy Chabot and I worked on what she would present the following month at my TEA Regional Workshop.
Dr. Nancy Chabot of the Antarcitc Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) attended a TEA regional workshop at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on April 17, 2004. She presented a talk on the type of science ANSMET does in Antarctica. This was done in place of visiting my classroom. The workshop was held at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Several teachers from throughout Colorado attended the workshop and left with numerous resources and activities that can be used in teaching the science of meteorites.
How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc?
I've given seven presentations to my classes in the past year plus included my Antarctic experience in the graduation speech last May.

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants:
We have been meeting monthly through a district mandated program called Professional Learning Communities (PLC's). These are small groups of teachers who work together to develop and improve their curriculum. Last year, I worked with the Introduction to Physical Science group and this year, I'm facilitating a group of teachers who all teach science electives. We've identified several science themes that permeate all of our classes and are working to improve the way we teach and assess these areas.

Other Classroom Connections:
I present on my Antarctic experience to my classes regularly. I concentate on meteorites in my astronomy class and glaciers in my geology class.
In February, Antarctic ICE CUBE scientist Dr. Jim Madsen, TEA Associate Ben Senson, and TEA Parcticipant Eric Muhs flew to Colorado to join me in developing a resource for teachers on the science of detection. We wrote a chapter on meteorites. The activities developed were later applied to my TEA Regional Workshop.
