Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? In June, 2003, I took an early retirement option from Linn-Benton Community College. I continue to interact with colleagues on the state, regional, and national levels through professional development projects. I often use the TEA Antarctic experience in this work.

We are using the model of our website, Polar Science Station (http://literacynet.org/polar), which is developed for the adult learner/instructor audience, in the development of Ocean Science Station (http://literacyworks.org/ocean). This website supports the Oregon Ocean Sciences and Math Collaborative Project, a state-wide professional development project in collaboration with Oregon State University College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, and Oregon Sea Grant. To date, four adult education instructors have gone to sea with ocean scientists. Each instructor has sent journal text and images to the Ocean Science Station website, using my TEA journals as a model. Each journal contains math/geography/writing questions, and there is a focus on workplace skills and job opportunities.

Other Classroom Connections: We were notified in February, 2004 that the website “POP Goes Antarctica”, on the Polar Science Station http://literacynet.org/polar has been nominated for inclusion as an educational resource in the Broad Collection of the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE). As it has been described, “DLESE is a nationwide effort to find, create, catalog and disseminate excellent digital materials for helping people learn and teach about the Earth and environment”. The “POP Goes Antarctica” website was designed to provide access to lower skill level learners to the world of polar science. This website, http://literacynet.org/polar/pop/html/home.html , has learning activities connected to workplace skills as well as specific math activities related to life and work at an American Antarctic program science research station.
