2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I have been working with my grade level team to create an interdisciplinary unit on the Polar Regions. We are still working on the details, but so far have planned: Science: an overview of scientific research taking place in the regions and how such projects connect with students lives in NH, a study of glaciers, ice core data and its significance, climate change, working and living in extreme environments, environmental issues, polar resources, connecting with TEA's in field - journals, etc. Social Studies: Polar exploration - the "Heroic Age", early political claims to Antarctica, the Antarctica Treaty, etc. Language Arts: Literature connections to Polar Regions: The Endurance, Frankenstein, The Snow Queen, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, etc. Technology Education: Looking at various technologies and instrumentation, comparisons between historic explorer ships and modern ice breakers, communication methods, etc. We are working to come up with specific objectives for our unit and for a culminating activity for the unit.

I have put together a power point presentation for various audiences. I have three presentations scheduled for the near future: January 22, 2003 (Websters at Rye senior citizen center and town meeting hall), February 13, 2003 (Rye PTO and the Rye Public Library), March 21, 2003 (Seacoast Educational Services: Teacher training workshops). I have numerous schools requesting visitations/presentations. The specific dates are yet to be determined - several schools wish to wait until I have a specific placement to discuss. I have also been invited by NHSTE (NH society for technology education) to present a workshop for teachers. I will also be presenting to my school board once I have been assigned to a research team - they requested to wait until I had been placed.

I am creating a "mentoring group" brochure to distibute to teachers, and community members invitning them to join the group. My focus will be for teachers who wish to enhance inquiry based science methods in their classrooms. One goal of the menotoring group will be to have a "retreat" up Mount Washington this winter.
