Additional Comments:
Students from my class worked on an intensive interdisciplinary unit about polar research. Part of this project involved a "poster session" showcasing the research being done in polar regions by past and present TEA parcticipants.
The Polar unit incorporated science, math, social studies, language arts, and art. Science involved investigating various research projects and creating a poster to reflect the research. We started a "Pond Probe" project that will establish a long term ecological study of a local pond in Rye - to mimic the investigations taking place in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Math class took the collected data from our studies as well as data (such as weather patterns) taken from the internet and graphed the results. Social studies investigated the Antarctic treaty, the native cultures of the Arctic, early exploartion maps/routes, and how communications have advanced over the years. Language arts class focused on the "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" and other polar stories.
Did you maintain a daily (or as often as possible) electronic journal while in the field?
Yes
Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members
Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants:
I have only been in touch with my team members through email. We are trying to coordinate a visit to my school in NH with all team members. The details and time of this visit are still in the planning stages. We are tentatively scheduled for early February.
How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc?
I have done several presentations for colleagues and several for other classrooms and schools. I presented at the NH Science Teachers Workshop held at Phillips Exeter Academy. I also presented at the seacoast Educational Services Teacher workshop day in NH. I also presented a hands on workshop for the NH Society for Technology in Education (Super Thursday workshop series). I made presentations in 4 different schools for multiple classes at each. I also made a presentation for our local senior citizens center. I have been featured in Newspaper arcticles/TV news broadcasts/radio spots.
I presented prior to my field experience to:

Other Classroom Connections:
Extreme cold weather gear is used to demonstrate and discuss proper protection for extreme environments. Probes are placed within the clothing to monitor temperature at various layers under various conditions. Students wear the gear during the experiements. New equipment obtained because of the TEA experience (such as probes, water sampling/collecting bottles, depth finders, etc.) are used to offer hands on experience with teh information being studied.
I hosted the TEA booth at the Philadelphia NSTA convention and attended the TEA presentations. I also helped set up and take down the TEA booth at the convention.
