It was very helpful to communicate concerning journals, digitals, It was also very positive to recieve email during my experience. This was very positive.

7/14-9/01
Wales, then New Salem (home)
I received a notice from someone viewing the site. They knew of a professor tragically killed in am Umiak (Inupiaq skinboat) a few years ago. She asked me if I could include a digital on my journal of an Umiak. Of course I did!!!
She was very happy about this. It also made me happy.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom in the last year?
Yes

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I have done extensive work with my classroom on archaeology. We have had a "dig" outside the school. We have studied Arctic animals, and have done research projects. We have also helped a 2nd grade class with Arctic and Antarctic animal reports. We have studied the people of Alaska, the different peoples across Canada and Greenland, and their way of life. They will be studying explorers and doing research next. They will also (16 students) pick a TEA person to do research on (where they went, what kind of science they did, and the outcome. This is coming in the next month. I have also gone to classroom in the school (6 classes) with a presentation on the people (Inupiaq), the Bering Strait, and about archaeology. I have gone to 3 fifth grades in Waltham, MA and am scheduled to a fifth grade (4 classes) in leominster, MA, March 6.

No

Associates Network

Number of Associates in local network: three

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: On 10/15 two classes explored the Arctic region and then sent letters to the school in Wales, Alasks. On 11/13-//14 both classes took part in an archaeological dig. The students first decorated pottery (after studying about Innuit Art). Unknown to them, we broke the pottery and buried in on school grounds along with bones (sheep) and classmade fossils. The studenst then had to measure out grids and and excavate the area. They then had to record their findings, and compile it as a class. They also had to write creatively about what it would be like to live in the Arctic 1000 years ago. They did this when Dr. Roger Harritt (my PI) visited the school.

It was very positive, the students had a great time, it was exciting and they learned a great deal ( I can tell by their essays), and their verval responses.

Fiher Hill School
The students worked on research projects with 2nd graders. They helped them with Arctic and Anytarctic animals.

This was very positive with my 5th graders. They liked "teaching". They liked helping the young kids with thier new found knowledge of an area. The 2nd graders liked having the help a lot. It was a very positive experience.
