1. Interaction

Field Experience

Continued Collaboration with Reasearch Team Members

Date: January through May 2000 and October 2000

Type of Interaction: periodic email contact of both a personal and professional nature.
Discussions of data analysis in the lab, preliminary results, preparation for 2000 field season.

November and December 2000
email and traditional mail from the field
I was able to interact with my team while they conducted a second field season. It was wonderful to feel a part of the team in absentia. They kept me up-to-date on their trips to Lake Bonney as well as any extracurricular fun they were able to squeeze in!

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom? (usually first year)
No

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Classroom Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with students? 1. Highly visible Antarctic display in the science wing of our school. 2. Continued interaction with local elementary schools through presentations. 3. Use of experience with nearly every unit covered in both my biology and environmental science classes. Students learn a tremendous amount with this anecdotal material. I have had students from last year come back to visit me and comment on my use of "storytelling" to illustrate a concept. 4. Implementing the idea that hypotheses change as data is accumulated. Students have been doing experiments that present challenges to their traditional thinking.
