Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members
How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc?
1. I dressed as an Antarctic explorer and presented a comparison of the Arctic and Antarctic in a self-contained, 6th grade, learning disabilities classroom. As they named each layer I was wearing we discussed why it was important as a human adaptation. Students were able to try on the pieces of clothing. I also did some hands-on demonstrations with the students like "blubber gloves" and a "Penguin Family Reunion."
2. On my own 6th grade team, my colleagues and I developed an Antarctic unit of study. I kicked it off with two presentations similar to the one listed in #1. One day we focused on fantastic facts about Antarctica and made comparisons to the Arctic. On another day we focused on human and animal adaptations and had some hands-on experiences simulating specific adaptations. The students were then involved in doing research on different Antarctic penguins. Each group demonstrated what they had learned by creating projects like a wall display, Power Point presentations and life-sized rookeries.
