Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: 1. Jen Baeseman and Karen Cozzetto, scientists on the Stream Team, and Gifford Wong, a helo tech from Antarctica, spent two days in my district making presentations with me at the Kennedy Jr. High and the Naperville North High School--April 28-29, 2003. We presented for 4 teams at the junior high, including an afternoon of hands-on, inquiry activities with one team. The next day we presented for 5 earth science classes and 1 health occupations class. 2. Attended the LTER meeting in Chicago with Diane McKnight and Karen Cozzetto--June 14-June 15, 2003. 3. Helped facilitate "Science on Ice" at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with other TEAs and Antarctic scientists, Jim Madsen, Francis Halzen, and Buford Price--June 22-July 3, 2003. 4. Jen Baeseman visited Kennedy Jr. High School and spoke to my students about stream science in Antarctica, Indiana, and Colorado. She also spoke about careers in science and women in science--Sept. 2, 2003. 5. Co-convened Midwest Polar Science Workshop for Teachers--Francis Halzen and Jen Baeseman presented--November 1, 2003. 6. Led students in Antarctic research project and connected them with different scientists online. The scientists partnered with different students to mentor them when they needed help with conflicting sources. The scientists included Ross Powell, Jen Baeseman, Karen Cozzetto, Francis Halzen, Tom Cioppa, and David Ainley.

Other Classroom Connections: My students are doing Antarctic research and are required to have at least one primary source. They are connecting online with different Antarctic scientists and TEAs. I am also working with a person stationed at McMurdo who is taking several classes and is required to connect with a classroom. She has been a great help in finding resources for my students and sends us pictures and interesting informations and stories. It has been a very positive experience.

4. Other TEA Activity Involvement


1. Helped run the TEA booth at NSTA in March, 2003. 2. Co-convened (with Betty Trummel) the Midwest Regional TEA Polar Science workshop-- had four scientists and about 30 teachers, 11/1/03 3.
