Were you in the field this season? No

Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: (My Ipaq crashed a few months ago and I lost all of my calendar dates, so the following are approximate dates. Sorry!) January--Jen Baesman visited my classroom and I also facilitated her working with Jane Hester's classroom. Jen talked to the students about her work with acid mine drainage and the relation of those studies with the work we did in Antarctica. May--Jen visited my class again and talked to them about careers in hydrology. July--I spent the weekend with Jen at her family's farm in Wisconsin. We discussed ways that we can continue to collaborate. September--several e-mails were exchanged with John Gartner concerning the topo maps we surveyed in Antarctica. October--Jen visited my classroom and talked about the work she will do in Antarctica this season. I facilitated her working with Jane Hester's class and also Barb Clarke's. October--I talked to Karen Cozzetto for several hours about ideas on how we can bring the IPY into classrooms around the country.

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? January--facilitated Jen Baeseman working with Jane Hester's class. We planned activities her students would do to enhance the learning experience. June-July--co-facilitated four week long inquiry science workshops in which I incorporated polar science activities. October--Jen visited my school again. I facilitated her working with Jane Hester's class and Barb Clarke's class. November-December--worked with Jane Hester to plan presentations at the Midwest Regional Polar Science Workshop I am convening in March, 2005. November 24, 2004--co-facilitated an iquiry, assessment and thinking skills inservice day which involved my mentees Jane Hester, Jenny Donatelli, Thad Whildin, and Joe Cave.

Presentation Date, Title, Number of Attendees, Etc. June-July, 2004--Presented Antarctica science within four week long inquiry science workshops.

July, 2004--"Find Your Passion"--talked to 60 pre-service teachers about bringing their interests into the classroom, like I did with Antarctica

July, 2004--presented with Jen Baeseman in Edgar, WI--80 adults and children

October, 2004--"Animals of the Antarctic"--DREAM Team, Kennedy Jr. High--60 students

October, 2004--helped create an Antarctic presentation for 6000 Boy Scouts at the "Around the World" Camporall

December, 2004--Madison Jr. High School--7th grade team--120 students--talked about Antarctica and the 5 themes of geography.

Activities Development

Title: Design Your Own Research

Description:
Students choose research topics that parallel Antarctic projects. Students might try to answer the question, Should scientists drill into Lake Vostok? I then paired each student with a scientist mentor.

Other Classroom Connections: Students are e-mailing Jen Baeseman while she is in Antarctica this research season.

Students are e-mailing a janitor in McMurdo while he is working there this season.

Students are e-mailing former TEA, Paul Jones, in McMurdo this season.

We are doing an adventure and survival unit is language arts including reading Shackleton's Endurance.
