1. Interaction

Field Experience

Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: Janice Rosenberg, Todd Hindman, Jay Schauer, and Sandy Kolb and I continue to be in touch with each other. We worked to create a situation last summer where we could work jointly on our Healy experience.
The summer connection was unable to occur. Janice and I still plan to work on such an idea for this next summer on our own time and funding. Jay, Todd, Sandy, and I keep ourselves posted in case we could gather together informally.

August, 2001
Corvallis, OR
Meeting with Kelly Falkner
Kelly and I met to discuss the impact of the TEA Arctic experience and the application of this into the classroom. We made a powerpoint showing the effectiveness of teaching polar science in the classroom. She shared this at a meeting she was to attend.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom in the last year?
Yes

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I continue to work on integrating my experiences into activities with my students in science. This year we are working with the Jason Project as its focus is Frozen Worlds. This has been a nice addition to my own experiences and materials.

Activities Development

Title: mapping the ocean floor

Description:
We made mystery landforms in covered boxes. By inserting skewers into holes in the covers, the students worked to determine what the bottom topography looked like.

Title: fresh water icebergs

Description:
Worked with frozen 'icebergs' that the students observed and experimented with the properties of this berg. They floated them in tanks and made further observations.

Title: salt water solutions

Description:
students work to discover the various methods to put things into solution and separate mixtures. They used 'icebergs' rolled in gravel and placed them at the top of ramps. They made observations as they melted.

4. Other TEA Activity Involvement

August, 2001 I have met with Susan Cowles to discuss her trip to Palmer Station. She came and spoke with my class, and they are now following her journal every day. We are e-mailing and working out her math problems.

I am storing the Toshiba Antarctic and Arctic Trunk for Elissa Elliott's project. It is a treasure of wonderful resources that I am taking advantage of whilst it resides here!

At present I am working with a group of teachers to design a student science conference focusing on the polar regions.
