1. Interaction

Field Experience

Continued Collaboration with Reasearch Team Members

Date: October - December 2001

Location: via Antarctica-Big Razorback field camp

Type of Interaction: The research team returned to McMurdo and the Big Razorback field camp for this season's research. The researcher (and his team) was online and communicated through emails with the new students I have this year in connection with my activities to introduce my previous experience and other TEA activities.
Students were able to form teams to ask questions of the researchers and then email the questions through my webpage and email. The researchers have left the ice for the season but we have not contacted them for closure follow-up since they have not returned to the university.

September '01
from classroom to researcher in Japan
I worked closly with another researcher from Japan during my field experience and have been able to keep up with his data findings and communication with my students

We have international contact to the seal project and Antarctic experience.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom? (usually first year)
No

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Classroom Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with students? I continue to do presentations to all levels (K - 8 ). I go to the schools and present my slides and research experience. I have had the opportunity to incorporate small hands-on activities in smaller grade-level settings. The students use research graphics from my field team to simulate the seal tagging and behavior observations that I took part in during my field experience. I visit with small groups of teachers to share reading resources that they can use before my presentations or as a follow-up. The teachers also recieve information on other Antarctic resources for follo-up or future use.
