1. Interaction

Field Experience

Were you in the field this season? No

Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: The PI, Dr Siniff, was in Antarctica for his last season of reseach and has since retired. Reseach assistant Michael Cameron, who accompanied me to Antarctica, also finished his final with the Weddell project. My class was able to keep informed of this years work via emails and on the project website all through their field season. Dr. Cameron now works for NOAA. He is now working with seals that live in the northern hemisphere so we have discussed a continuing partnership of some kind.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom in the last year?
N/A

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I have continued to reach elementary, middle school and some high school classrooms through presentations. I have done three teacher in-services and was a speaker at our local conference. In all, this year I did over thirty school presentations or appearances. I am also working with the teachers in my new district, mostly grades kindergarten, third and fourth, and sixth grades right now, to write the correlation between my TEA research experience and their grade-level curriculm to be able to continue recieving funding to cover my substitutes when I am out of my classroom to collaborate, present or teach regarding my research experience. I have calculated approximately twenty-five to thirty hours of work with these varies colleagues. I have not worked successfully for much of this past year with the remaining to mentees that I began with since my research expeience season. As I will indicate, their curriculm and district focus has put most of our work out of their use so they are not as interested in continuing with their arrangement with me. I have however been using all that we did accomplish in the first year and a half of our work, in the workshops and teacher in-services this year.

Other Classroom Connections: My students parcticipated in a field test of the American Museum of Natural History's Antarctica curriculm. The field test ran from early October until the end of November. We used the AMNH website project to research and develop a full-day presentation fair at our school. Students and parents came and went through the displays and activities that students developed after their work with the AMNH program. It was a huge success and plans are in the work to coordinate this as an annual event for the sixth graders.
