Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: Dr. Jeb Barrett and I developed a student research experience. We selected a Hanover High junior to work in the Dartmouth lab during the summer of 2001 to learn and work with the Antarctic soils (PI research). The student learned how to conduct various biogeochemical analysis of the soils and then developed their own research project.
The internship was a very big success form both the Darmtouth perspective and the student. Currently the student is involved in developing a new technique for extracting nematode DNA.

The program was such a success, that we will be expanding the program for two junior students to be in the Dartmouth lab during the summer 2003

March 2003
San Diego
Dr. Jeb Barrett and I will present the Antarctic Soil Incubation activity that we designed at the NSTA Annual Convention.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom in the last year?
Yes

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? 1. During the acid/base unit in chemistry, all three of the chemistry teachers (myself included) run the Antarctic Soil Incubation Activity that i designed with my research team last year. This activity begins with me presenting a power point presentation to all of the classes explaining the research going on in the dry valleys. Next the student set-up and run a 30 day soil incubation experiment.

2. During the Biodiversity/Ecological unit at the Hanover High School Middle school, I present a power point presentation to 8 seventh grade classes.

3. Upon my return I presented to the school board, the Hanover High Staff. I also present to several area sponsors who help through equipment donation, film, etc.

I have been asked to present my experience with several other school (within the area and outside of the area).
