Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: Conference Call on 11 December, 2002 Marjorie Porter, facilitor Andy Sajor, Dora Nelson TEA Mentor Group The agenda for this first call: 1. Updates about mentoring teams (progress and possibilities), and 2. Reminders of important deadlines. We discussed progress and lack thereof in recruiting and working with mentees. Andy is well-along with his mentees and is already working on curriculum integration, while I am having difficulty getting teachers to committ. My school community, while small and idyllic, does not have a large pool of possible parcticipants to draw on, and this has been a challenge. We also discussed how much easier it would be to recruit mentees once we find out our actual TEA project. Andy and Marge were extremely helpful to me in suggesting strategies for mentee recruitment and planning initial activities and meetings. One member of our original mentor group decided not to parcticipate in the TEA program, leaving only two parcticipants. Marjorie thought it best that Andy and I be placed in larger groups in order to have a more interactive, dynamic "pool" of ideas from a more diverse group of parcticipants. While I am always delighted to talk with Andy, I believe that Marge is correct in her assessment, and that a larger group would benefit both of us. Another conference call will be scheduled for sometime in February, 2003.

Telephone call with Judith Curry 1/7/03 We discussed the HARC project in general and possible assignments and/or duties for me. I found her to be absolutely wonderful and very encouraging. Dr. Curry is working on the final schedule for visitation and travel, and I have not received that as of the date of this report. She indicated that I would more than likely travel to Georgia Tech. and the University of Colorado/Boulder during the summer 2003 to meet with team members and become acquainted with the program, and then go into the field sometime during the 2003-2004 fall/spring/summer -- dates TBA. Since I live within a short drive to Georgia Tech, I am planning a trip to meet with Dr. Curry sometime in February -- dates TBA.

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I have written arcticles for our school newspaper and have been written up in our community newspaper. At the state science conference in November I attended April Cheuvront's presentation, April was kind enough to introduce me and I spoke with several members in the audience about my up-coming project (although it as still to be determined at that time). I have developed an email group of teachers interested in me visiting their classrooms both before and after the trip. In addition to local and area schools, I have been asked to present to the Southern Applachian Mineral Society in Asheville, the Colburn Gem and Mineral Museum (this facility is in the process of redirecting their focus to more earth/environmental science topics). Both the Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools have asked me to plan a one-half or one-day inservice workshop. Now that I have a concrete idea of myactual TEA project, it will be easier to begin planning and working with various groups. Within my own school, I will be meeting with the Division Heads and Science Department members on 23 January to begin outlining mentoring possiblities. One aspect of the HARC project is builing a connection with students in Barrow, Alaska, and several teachers, both at my school and other schools in the area, are anxious to begin working on this perspective.
