Additional Comments: Last minute changes to the primary field party I was working with changed my field experience. Instead of working with three field parties I worked full time with Dr. Hammer because one of his group saw scrubbed three days before departure due to health reasons. THe local newspaper, The Press Republican ran print arcticles on my experience as well as internet arcticles and a photo gallery. For 5 of the 6 weeks I was in Antarctica, the paper's website had us as the lead story.

Did you maintain a daily (or as often as possible) electronic journal while in the field? Yes

Is your journal complete? Yes

Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: The earth science teachers in my district and I are developing a series of lab exercises based on some of the images, data and material taken in the field. These are on the following topics: Altitude of the sun and the time of day. The International dateline and longitude/latitude/time calculations. Interpretation of ancient environments using fossil remains and physical/ chemical weathering patterns in various environments. These projects will be developed in cooperation with Drs' Hammer and Currie as well as field technician, Kevin Kruger. Dr. Hammer will be visiting my school in late spring (Final dates have not been determined yet.) we are also trying capitalize on his visit here and have him include a talk to the local college and community college.

Also, while in McMurdo, I made contact with the scientists working on the NASA sponsored TRACER and TIGER projects and we are working on some ideas to translate some of the science they are doing to the high school classroom. However this will take a back burner approach until we have completed work on Dr. Hammer’s project.

Our pre-existing collaboration with Richard Brandt from Washington State and Paul Smiths College will continue as his research in snow surface albiedo and atmospheric density continues.

Has a member of your research team visited your classroom in the last year?
No

2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? Prior to leaving for the Antarctic, the school district gave me two days to visit classrooms and give presentations. During that time I met with over 400 students spread out over 12 contact hours. I also gave presentations to the School board, teachers association and the Plattsburgh Rotary Club.

Since I have returned, I have already scheduled three presentations (not including the joint presentations Dr. Hammer and I will be doing) and have been contacted by several other groups to give talks. I have already started a series of classroom presentations to grade 3 students who are presently studying arctic regions.

The local public television station is working with me to create a program from the video tape I shot while in Antarctica. The camera was supplied by the TV station and their production staff will work with me to put the tape into cohesive program.

I am also putting together a final arcticle for the newspaper which will run it in both print and on the web.

Presentations to the SUNY Plattsburgh education departmentgraduate program.
