Journal Note: TEA site was down/having problems about the time I returned from the field. While all of my journals are posted, not all the pictures are up yet, and some of the "corrected" journals are also not up yet. These problems will be fixed soon.

Continued Collaboration with Research Team Members

Type of Interaction / Outcomes / Dates / Locations / Parcticipants: The co-PI on my project has mentioned that if he receives funding for the Antarctic reserach project that he is in the middle of writing/proposing, he is interested in having me join the team. He wants me help with educational related activities, as well as travel down to Palmer station to assist with field work. (Naturally, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will come to fruition...)

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? 1/23/2003- Brought the ECW gear to Ballard Elementary School and talked to three of the four 3rd grade classes. Roughly 75 kids, 3 teachers, and 5 support staff were present.

1/27/2003- Brought the ECW gear back to Ballard to present to the other third grade class. Roughly 25 kids, 1 teacher and 1 support staff was present.

8/25/03- Presented "TEA Overview" to the Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club. Roughly 25 members.

9/15/03-Presented an overview of my upcoming experience to all the science department chairs in my county (12 teachers and science supervisor)

9/22/03- Presentation before the board (also shown on local television channel)Approx 50 people saw it live

10/21/03- The first day of the "grand tour of interested Manatee County schools" Brought in ECW gear, did a short powerpoint about the polar regions and what I was going to be doing there. Visted 5 schools and spoke to a total of approx 360 students (grades K, 3 4, 5)

10/23/03- Second day of the grand tour. Visited 4 schools, but did five presentations. Spoke to nearly 250 kids (grades 1, 2,3 5, 8)

10/24/03 Last "tour date". Visited 2 elementary schools and two middle schools. (Grades 3, 5 7, 8) Spoke to approx 640 students

11/06/03- TEA overview to the staff of Harllee Middle School (had an open house in my classroom) Approx 20 staff members came

11/10/03- Presentation at Children's Haven and Adult Community Service's High School High Tech program. Spoke to nearly 75 people.

Presentations and Real Audio Sessions

2/8/2003- Presented my unit on "Extreme Science" to the International Space Station Educators Conference in Houston, Texas. There I explained how I teach space and Antarctica "side by side". I gave them both space and Antarctic resources and informed them about the TEA program. About 25 teachers attended and several of them asked for my card so that they could have their kids follow my upcoming field experience. In addition, while attending the conference several other teachers (friends of teacher friends of mine) were very interested in having their kids follow me.

Other Classroom Connections: Classes continued with Antarctic Engineering project developed last year.

My team and I wrote and received a NGS grant for interdisciplinary unit centered on the topic of Discovery/exploration. Navigation, GPS, map reading, etc. (Antarctic exploration was a large part of this...)

The above donations were used to purchase the following: a digital camera and accessories (marine casing memory stick, extra battery, case, etc.), the supplies for teacher packets (blank CDs, CD labels, business cards, paper, computer ink,postage, printing) and some additional gear items/supplies not provided that my PI thought I should have (silk long johns, 180 earmuffs, camel back, polypro sport bras and panties, smart wool socks, face mask etc.). Money not spent will be used to purchase supplies for future teacher workshops
