2. Community / Colleague Outreach

Transfer

How are you sharing your research experience with your colleagues, district, community, etc? I have incorporated aspects of my research experience into all of my classes. At present this includes Biology II, where we do alot of penguin population and food web stuf. In Chemistry we looked at how radio isotopes are used to date various materials, such as the dried seals found in the dry valleys. For this we used an activity from the TEA activities. In Physical Science there are a number of smaller connections made to the poles. These are in the form of quick demos, discussion topics, readings, videos. We have also used my "Penguin Preferences" activity which takes about 2 hours. I also had the physical science classes read "Endurance", with daily discussion at the beginning of class. This was used to lead into the unit on Antarctica. This fall, allof my biology students and 80 students form another teachers geography classes went to a local film fest showing of "Endurance". This was followed up with in class discussion. I continue to take my slide and video presentation to the Elementary and Middle schools in the area. I have a grant to pay for class release time so that I can do this whenever there is a request.
