Aloha!

Things stepped up their pace a bit today. After getting a tour of the lab and the campus, Dr. Karl and I talked about the specifics of the trip and of the science that will be studied while I am here and in Antarctica.

The vessel we will travel on is called the "Laurence M. Gould." It is currently under construction in Galliano, Louisiana. Ours will be the first scientific use of the vessel. I looked at pictures of it being built, and it looks huge! Our path to Antarctica will go through Chile to the area around and including Palmer Station.

My part of the project in Antarctica will involve contrasting the size of the bacteria in Hawai'ian open ocean with that of the bacteria in Antarctica. More on this later.

It is all so exciting!

Aloha,

Besse Dawson
