Preparing for the Arctic

A week from now I'll be boarding the icebreaker USCGC HEALY in St. Johns, Newfoundland. St Johns is on the southeastern coast of Canada-over 3,000 miles from my home in Oregon. Right now I'm busy packing for the trip. The scientists have lent me warm jackets, gloves, boots, hats, and snow pants to take on the expedition. I'll also need to take my camera, pads of paper and pens for taking notes, and sunglasses to protect my eyes from the bright sun. I hope I can fit it all in my suitcase!

I have been sharing my upcoming adventure with many of the students in our school and town. I hope to share this journey with you as well through the Internet. We'll be at sea from May 25, 2000 until June 10, 2000. Each day teacher Janice Rosenberg and I will be sending letters to you back at home and school. Read carefully, wonder about what we're doing, send us questions, and enjoy the ride! I'd better get packing now!
