Wrap up our work for this year and plan for next year

We checked out the TEA website for an update of resources and the journals of April Chevront. We discussed the paperwork needed to complete our SDI. We planned for next year: Get and utilize the Arctic and Antarctic trunks Continue to revise and incoporate polar units into our curricula and eventually share them with colleages Betty will visit classrooms to do presentations. Dr. Jackie Grebmeier will visit. We will try to set up a Big Kid - Little Kid connection. We will pursue the opportunity to write curriculum during the summer of 2003.

To present our individual SDI work to Jane Goodman, coordinator of the SDI Program.

Each person presented their work to date on the Polar SDI.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
John had revised his Polar unit substantially as a result of our work this year. Dana was teaching his Polar unit for the first time and he talked about the work he had done, parcticularly two experiments which his students enjoyed. Lynn's work is still in the planning stages for her class for the fall, but she shared her thoughts for the curriculum outline. Peter shared the revisions he had done on his Arctic unit.

- Peter shared a video of his 6th grade students making igloos. - Peter shared a report format he uses with his students and we looked at several completed reports. - Dana updated us on the NWF workshop. - We discussed using the Arctic and Antarctic resource trunks. - We planned our CRREL visit. - We made plans to follow Dana Gershon's work with the Inuit community on Little Diomede Island. - Peter and Dana shared ideas for building igloos as Dana will be doing this for the first time this year.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
- We talked with Peter about the report format he uses. - We discussed the possibility of using the Fuide for Writing Standards-Based Units, a book which is written by a friend of Betty's and which will be published soon.

- We reviewed the Essex Town schools outline for standards-based units. - We decided to look for good arcticles to share and discuss.

This was a mid-year check in for all teams working on a School Development Institute project.

- Each team reported on the work they have been doing related to their stated goals. - Each group shared ideas for how best to share their work with others.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
- The entire session revolved around pedagogy as each team (ours was the only science team) talked about the implementation of best practice.

- Peter shared his Polar regions cartoons with us. - We changed our date to visit CRREL so we could also visit Kevin Lavigne's (TEA-Antarctica) classroom at Hanover HS. - Betty distributed the list of this year's Arctic parcticipants, their projects, and the dates of their field work. - We watched the Jason Project videos.

- Share of arcticles and resources - Spend time on the TEA website

- John shared several books he uses with his students. - Peter shared a report done by one of his students. The student, a 6th grader, had done a web search and found 10 arcticles. - We discussed the NYT arcticle, "Watching the World Melt Away." - We spent a considerable amount of time on the TEA site checking out the field journals of Shannon Graham and Dena Gershon.

- We will each bring a copy of the Vermont Framework of Standards to our next meeting.

- We spent time looking at the materials and trying to determine appropriate grade levels. - Betty will prepare an annotated bibliography and distribute it to everyone.

Note: Peter Gustafson and Lynn Short did not actually attend this meeting, but Betty met with each of them individually (Peter - Sept. 25 and Lynn - Sept. 30) to accomplish the same goals.

- to prepare for use of the Arctic trunk(s) - to prepare for a visit by Jackie Grebmeier and Lee Cooper - to review Betty's journals and decide how best to utilize them in the classroom

- We discussed getting the trunks in January, hopefully before Jackie and Lee visit. - We spent considerable time discussing how to best utilize Betty's journals. - Betty distributed hard copies of her journals.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
- Dana suggested making a CD to go with the journals. He will review the journals to see what is appropriate for his 6th grade science students and what might need to be re-written. - John will follow one of the TEA Antarctica teachers and try to parcticipate in one of the live audio transmissions. - Dana will inform the EMS teachers that Betty is available to come into their classrooms.

- Peter and John will review Betty's journals to see how they might be adapted for 6th grade social studies and a combined grade 4/5 class.

- to plan the Big Kid - Little Kid Polar Event

- We spent all our time planning. The schedule is basically set, and each of us will spend time developing one of the four "stations," native Alaskan food, a snow relay race to simulate the sled dog relay to bring diptheria serum to Nome, a science station, and and art/culture station.

- We spent considerable time talking about the best way to mix age groups and make activities developmentally appropriate.

We checked the websites of current Antarctic TEA's. Betty distributed arcticles related to the Arctic and Antarctica. We planned for visits by Betty to elementary and middle school classes. We planned for a mentor/colleague meeting to coincide with Peter's classes' igloo building. We started plans for our Polar Event day to coincide with the visit from Dr. Jackie Grebmeier and Dr. Lee Cooper.
