Date: 8/9/02
Duration: 15 minutes
Location: CRREL
Parcticipants: Mentoring Resource Group: Susy Ellison, Jim Pogers, Michael Lampert

Goal(s) of Meeting
Goals: · Develop ideas for our mentoring programs · Brainstorm ways to recruit mentoring team members · Discuss alignment of mentoring program with school science goals

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
Team members discussed possibilities for mentoring programs within their schools. We clarified ideas that would work at our schools and what would make those successful experiences for all parcticipants. Discussed ways of recruiting mentoring team members. Planned bi-monthly tele-conference MRG meetings.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
Discussed need to focus on hands-on, inquiry-based science-type experiences throughout the mentoring project.

Additional reflections:

Date: 9/13/02
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Yampah Mountain High School
Parcticipants: Susy Ellison, Mike Podmore, Leigh McGown Kauffman, Diana Davis, Tom Heald, Sonja Linman

Goal(s) of Meeting
Explain the TEA Program and general goals of mentoring project Create mentoring group Explain basics of inquiry-based science

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
Develop general goals for mentoring group Create list of possible projects

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
I gave a brief overview of inquiry-based science and its alignment with our Colorado State Science Standards

Additional reflections:
My mentor group consists, primarily, of non-science teachers. Since I am the only 'official' science teacher at Yampah Mountain High School I feel it is important that more of our staff become proficient and comfortable in guiding students through science-based units of study. I have teachers representing each of our programs (the alternative high school, teen parent, and Wellspring treatment program for SIED middle and high school students).

Date: 10/3/02
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Yampah Mountain High School
Parcticipants: Mike Podmore, Leigh McGown Kauffman, Diana Davis, Tom Heald

Goal(s) of Meeting
Create year-long plan for meeting Develop overall group goals

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
Planned meeting times/focus for the school year We will try to meet for a total of 60 hours this year--this will include a week-long course in June Group goals Develop a series of science-based passages for student use. These passages will reflect the principles of inquiry-based science. Increase general group knowledge of science concepts and teaching techniques. Develop a knowledge base of antarctic-based information Planned our next meeting--we will all attend the 2002 CAST Conference in Denver in November

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
We included these concepts in our discussions about student needs (in the science realm) and how to address those needs.

Additional reflections:

Date: 11/22/02
Duration: 8 hours
Location: Denver Colorado, 2002 CAST Conference
Parcticipants: Susy Ellison, Mike Podmore, Leigh McGown Kauffman, Diana Davis

Goal(s) of Meeting
Attend a variety of sessions at the CAST conference to learn new information, examine a variety of programs, and develop contacts for bringing additional science programming to our school.

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
We all attended sessions for the day (4-5 total). Sometimes we teamed up, for some we followed our individual interests.

Our next meeting will be a field trip to a science center in Grand Junction, Colorado.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
We discussed the sessions we attended and looked at how they fit with current science teaching techniques. We also analyzed some of the programs and information with an eye towards bringing them to our students.

Additional reflections:
This was a valuable use of our time. All members of the group felt like they had attended sessions that would have useful transfer to students.
