Barbara took a semester of graduate classes in science education so we discussed some strategies she learned and how her chemistry class was integrated with education.

Our middle school students vary academically. We have students from 1st grade to at grade level. Dividing students and grouping them based interest level was discussed in this meeting.

As science mentor, I worked with Arlan to provide an activity to MS students. We did an activity where students had to design their own experiment, which is not often addressed until now.

Addressing student designed experiments is a new concept. This was a new concept for Arlan as he feels comfortable with textbooks.

Hawley and I split responsibilities for this activity. Hawley is a student teacher and she's only been with us a few weeks now so we co-taught an activity.

Hawley took over Janice's portion of science so we spent a few hours everyday to plan activities while I'm in the field.

Students in Hawley's class will compare ice thicknes from Poker Flat the week I'm in Fairbanks. Robert, a 5th/6th grade teacher will compare day and night temperatures.

Hawley and I discussed possible changes we would do if this were to happen again next year. She used my journals as current events during her language class and we discussed the accomplishments from each students.

Plan activities for MS students

We plan to meet weekly for 2 hours to discuss plans for the following week. Hawley and I often try to provide an activity that will address misconceptions students had earlier in the week.

We discussed technology and how students did during my work in Fairbanks. Students are now working on their science fair experiments and we have 1/3 of our students doing snow and ice projects.

Weekly meeting to plan activities for MS students

Hawley and I are responsible for the science fair so we used this time to prepare student experiments and their report writing.

Students seem restless with the Science fair binders I developed so we discussed ways to make their binders more simple. Students are having a difficult time writing their reports so we talked about ways to address this issue.

To compare workshops and how to apply what we've learned with our students.

We used this time to split up workshops, discuss what we've learned, share materials, visit exhibition booths, catch-up on what we've done since January. We also used this time to prepare for our presenation with Dr. Delena Norris-Tull on Saturday.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
Barbara is a graduate student in New York so we don't often see each other. This was a great opportunity to exchange new ideas and share what we've done since January. Barbara gave me some ideas from her chemistry class in terms of how to revise activities so they're more inquiry-based.

Our presentation on Saturday with Dr. Delena Norris-Tull was a success but we didn't have that many parcticipants.

Finalize Science fair experiments with students

Whew! This was a busy week with students. Students felt overwhelmed because some of their experiments failed or they were still struggling with their writing.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
Hawley and I continued to work with students one on one and met to review our actions towards each situation. As I mentioend earlier, we have 1/3 of our students doing experiments on snow or ice. Many of our students had to repeat their experiment due to lack of time in the cottages or lack of materials.

Our weekly meetings continue to be as thorough as we anticipanted. Hawley will be taking over my science classes soon so we prepared Power Points that encouraged student involvement.

The Power Point presentations on erosion included glacial erosion. Hawley found wonderful images to add and we discuss what questions we should use to start off the presentation. We're working doing more inquiry-based activities.

Michelle wants to do this project for her 1st/2nd grade students. We discussed necessary materials and logistics.

We need to get permission to allow vertebrates on campus so we discuss ways we could address this project to our supervisor. Michelle wants her classroom/students to be a place for deaf students in the Vancouver area to come visit.

Hawley is now wrapping up as she will finish the first week of June. She wants to visit my high school science classes to compare her experience with MS students.

We discussed how we could make our activities more technology friendly. MS students love computers so we want to continue their interest in hopes to increase their motivation to learn science.

Her defense needs to include some successful lessons during Hawley's student teaching. We also reviewed some educational theories that were applicable to some of those lessons. I served on her defense panel so we drove together.

We reviewed our activities and elaborated each section of the TEA activities template.

We also covered our TEA team goals and discussed plans to share our experiences with the other two TEA team members.

Hawley and I address every section on the TEA activities template. We had the opportunity to discuss TEA related topics on the plane there and back. This workshop was wonderful for both of us. We both really benefitted from sharing and hearing ideas from other teachers.

We use this time to change my PowerPoint and discuss safety issues with snow polymers in the classroom. We checked to make sure this activity was inquiry based and discussed logistics.

Hawey and I discussed ideas for the Seattle regional conference and Toyota Tapestry grant. We agreed we would write up proposal on my snow density activity for the conference and a research project involving 3 schools for the Toyota Tapestry grant.

For the project involving 3 other schools, we would need video conference to communicate. We discussed what other schools would be interested in parcticipating.

Barbara is now teaching high school students at a model school in Washington, DC. I flew to DC for Thanksgiving and spent some time with Barbara catching up on the TEA activities workshop and other goals we've accomplished.

I now have a snow density activity for Elementary and Middle school students so we used this time to adapt for HS students. We also discussed students' previous knowledge and equipment needed for this activity.

Detailed plans for the Beaumont grant project.

We spent this time to plan 5 trainings in 5 months for teachers using technology. Time outline, rubric for each activity, examples of student projects teachers will need to do prior to end of school.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
Michelle and I discussed how I could teach my part of this project on science and math inquiry. We also talked about some ideas how we could increase language time in science/math classes.
