Context Information: Teaching Responsibilities: Third Grade Teacher in a self-contained classroom Third Grade Level Lead Teacher Birmingham City Schools Mentor Teacher Superintendent Appointed Member of the National Commission for Teaching America’s Future

My Classroom: 23 Third Grade Students 8/9 Year-olds Large classroom on the corner of the hallway Has been completely remodeled and updated by me through grants A large "tree" from the floor to the ceiling takes up one whole corner of the classroom Stuffed animals are located everywhere and throughout the classroom as representations of the animals I have seen where I have taught all over the world I facilitate group projects through inquiry, research-based instruction 5 Computers in the classroom; 3 are on-line

My School: 354 Students Grades K-5 90% African-American 40 Teachers in all including SLD, G/T, PMR, Art, Music, Band, Strings, Media Specialist, Counselor, Speech Therapist, and P.E. Coach 21 Classrooms, Gym, and Library

My Community: The school is located in a quickly changing demographic environment. Up until 2 years ago, the school was in the outskirts of the city limits. With the building of a new subsidized housing community, most of the Caucasian citizens have moved out of the community and it has become another inner city neighborhood. Local businesses, churches, and organizations are actively involved in the school highly supporting it.

My Specific Plans Are To: Develop a committee with the science director one elementary teacher, one middle school teacher, and one high school teacher.

Mentor my team teacher/partner, David Cordes

Mentor my 2 co-teacher trainers for the JASON Project Evelyn Kelley and Mary Beth Katz

Have a district wide workshop and ask for those who want to be mentored on a one-on-one basis to see me afterwards

Present the TEA Program at the Alabama Science Teachers’ Association Conference and ask those interested in being mentored to see me afterwards

Mentor TEA Associates in my state

Mentor home school umbrella teachers in my church

Present at annual Geofest workshop for AL Geo Alliance and ask if anyone is interested in being mentored

Mentor Brenda Eubanks who has asked that I mentor her

Mentor the first year teacher in my grade level

Establish collaborative workgroups in my building
