Goal(s) of Meeting
Practice Telescope techniques for the Eastern Oregon trip

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
We had a night session to make sure we could operate and take photos of the night sky. Several students will be using these scopes to do research (the focus of my mentor group) and we wanted to make sure we could do it first.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
This is all brand new equipment, the software issue were difficult to overcome.

Goal(s) of Meeting
Pre Plan summer trip to Eastern Oregon

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
We are taking ten research kids out to the desert to study astronomy and archeology. Additionally kids will do other side experiments like pollen analysis of the dry lakes. The planning includes all the logisitics needed to support kids and us for eight days in rugged terrain. Also, we are looking at how to care and maintain the scopes while we are out there.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
technology is the big issue, getting battery power to all the equipment is critical and taking care of optics in the desert is difficult. on the pedogogy side we have guest speakers coming in to the desert to meet us at our location.

Date: 08/11/04
Duration: ten days (33 hours)
Location: Eastern Oregon Desert
Parcticipants: Graham Dey, Steve Holman, Chasity Malatesta and students

Goal(s) of Meeting
Research ancient indian sites. learning to do ArcheoAstronomy.

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
This was a ten day trip to the desert. We were working as a group to help students gather data for research projects for the Intel science talent search. We worked each day in informal meetings at our campsite and while we walked through the petroglyphs of eastern oregon. In the day we used GPS to map the location of the art work and took pictures of the sites. We then spent the evening doing astronomy, using advanced ccd imaging cameras and scopes and state of the art software to gather data. Students were expected to use the results of their data to later enter science contests. This was a huge project that took a lot of time. It was the express goal of our mentoring group to promote research. Counting hours to what was travel to get out there, and what was actual one on one time talking to each other about the analogies to Antarctica, and to bring the connections of remote environments to where we were, is somewhat nebuleous. I estimate that of the ten days, 33 hours should count toward mentoring.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
wow, with guest speakers driving all the way out there, and truckloads of equipment it was a unique experience in pedagogy and technology. the most important thing is asking kids questions, and they asking us. scientific inquiry.

Additional reflections:
excellent research experience, pollen samples collected were great, rained too much for decent astronomy.

Goal(s) of Meeting
Oregon Science Teachers Association Conference

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
We did this over several days, we planned how to use our school to host the entire OSTA conference of upwards of 400 to 500 people. We were responsible for physically setting up the conference, tables, banners, food... We also planned some of the activities, including results of research, demonstrations that we had jointly learned, and finally organizing my talk, the keynote presentation at the conference in which all my mentees helped out. I estimate the time spent in preparing and executing this day long conference as 9 hours specific to my mentoring duties. Again this is always hard to estimate.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
we learned new techniques from our colleagues

Additional reflections:
i had a chance to make connections with a group of teachers from Pakistan. that was really cool.
