What is your role within your team?
I am the team leader who coordinates the group.

What professional growth goals do you and your team members hope to reach through this partnership?
Goal of Mentoring Plan:

TEA is strongly oriented toward providing teachers with a genuine research experience. It is the primary goal of this mentoring plan to expand that to our students and to involve them in as many ways as possible to do research in our school setting.

It is the express goal of TEA to demonstrate to students the science research that is conducted in the Antarctic and the Arctic. It is the secondary goal of this mentoring program to outreach to our local elementary schools in ways that allow them to explore science and see the meaningful work that scientists do.

How will you and your team reflect on these goals and on learning and classroom practice (e.g., pedagogy, the use of technology, content, the process of science)?
Our team will reflect on the goals through discussion about student outcomes in our classes. We will find mutual times to meet throughout the school year. We will stay current on the use of technology and curriculum content.

Mentoring Plan (Revised from Orientation)
Objectives:

1) To collaborate on ways in which the Antarctica experience can be brought into individual classrooms in meaningful lessons. 2) To invite guest scientists to give presentations about their research and careers to science students. 3) To write several grants over the years that explicitly target science research in the classroom. 4) To attend science meetings and scientific lectures to expand both the teachers and students knowledge. 5) To establish a science research class at West Salem High School. 6) To communicate with local elementary schools through science partnerships that allow older kids to become science mentors for younger kids. 7) To encourage application into the TEA program and the northwest Partners in Science program. 8) To stay current in the science field by gathering informally to discuss science research topics. 9) To compete in science research competitions both locally and nationally. 10) To engage elementary students in a long range plan that encourages them to take science when they reach high school.

Methods to accomplish objectives:

All of the teachers who have agreed to be mentored teach in the Salem-Keizer School district. Three are in my own building. We will meet on an individual basis or as a group for presentations. We shall communicate through email and through one-on-one meetings. We shall involve the local elementary schools in monthly or bi-monthly discussions when we find time to bring our students into their classrooms. Grant writing shall take place after school and weekends. If the grant writing is successful we should be able to secure more meeting time with funds generated by the grant.
