Date: 7/8/2002
Duration: 2 weeks : 11 days @ 9 hours/day = 99 hours
Location: University of Wisconsin, River Falls
Parcticipants: Eric Muhs, Becky Fowler, Bob Olona, Paul Witt

Goal(s) of Meeting
We all parcticipated in a 2 week long course called Astronomy in the Ice. It was a course about neutrino physics, specifically related to the AMANDA & ICECUBE projects under construction in the deep ice at the South Pole. Goals : a) deepen content area knowledge b) create mentoring group (bonding !) c) develop specific hands-on lab activities related to neutrino physics d) develop understanding of my TEA experience

Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.):
We attended 8 days of classes (8 hours per day). We also ate meals together, did homework together, and spent the weekend in between the 2 weeks of classes together. The out-of-class times were perhaps more valuable than the classtime itself (the classes were great, mind you), because we were able to debrief, reteach, and converse in a more open-ended way about what we were doing & learning.

How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session?
These were constant themes throughout our stay in River Falls. Since all of us in our group were a long way from home, we had few distractions, and really were able to concentrate on what we were doing. Afternoon class sessions were devoted to developing labs. In the first week, a number of labs were introduced. In the second week, we divided into groups, and developed the activities we'd worked with into more formal labs, aligned with science curriculum standards, and presented our work to the other parcticipants.
