Goal(s) of Meeting Attending & presenting at American Association of Physics Teachers National Convention.
Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.): We attended a lot of astrophysics sessions, and presented our own work, and debriefed and compared notes extensively.
How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session? Our work was primarily content focused. We only discussed pedagogy in the context of incorporating specific content ideas into curriculum.
Additional reflections: Miami is pretty nice in January !
Date: 8/2-6/04
Duration: 5 days
Location: University of Washington, Seattle, Wa
Parcticipants: Eric Muhs, Tom Haff, Becky Fowler, Mark Buchli
Goal(s) of Meeting Update for new DAQ card, calibration techniques, and classroom use ideas during annual WALTA workshop. This is our local cosmic ray detector network collaboration.
Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.): 5 day workshop focused on continued building of our local cosmic ray detector network. Teachers and their students parcticipate in the process of science, and learn content as needed to support the network.
How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session? The workshop is very content rich, with talks by university professors on cosmic ray astrophysics. Teachers also have lots of time to discuss ways to incorporate this content into physics classes.
Additional reflections:
Date: 9/25/04
Duration: 7 hours
Location: Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Wa
Parcticipants: Eric Muhs, Tom Haff, Mark Buchli
Goal(s) of Meeting Planning & Strategy for “ new” WSTA journal
Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.): Tom & I met alone and with other WSTA board members to discuss and plan the new Washington Science Teacher’s Association Journal. The previous editor put out a rather dry, academic publication, which has been in a tailspin of declining readership for several years now. We’re going to make it much more classroom teacher friendly.
How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session? Tom & I expect to learn a lot of pedagogy from our work on this publication. There's a lot of WSTA board members who are really top-notch in this area.
We’re already pretty good on content.
Additional reflections:
Date: 10/30/04
Duration: 5 hours
Location: Green River Community College, Auburn, Wa
Parcticipants: Eric Muhs, Tom Haff, Mark Buchli
Goal(s) of Meeting We all did presentations on our incorporation of modern physics into our classrooms.
Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.): We also did a lot of networking and “ spreading the word” about resources to accomplish modernizing a physics course.
How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session? As usual, we were very focused on content, and only discussed pedgagogy in the context of specific content.
Additional reflections:
Date: 11/21-22/04
Duration: 2 days
Location: Convention Center, Seattle, Wa
Parcticipants: Eric Muhs, Tom Haff
Goal(s) of Meeting Continued Planning & Strategey for “ new” WSTA journal, and beginning production tasks and interviews.
Overview of Session (e.g., resources used, discussion points, next steps, etc.): Tom & I met alone and with other WSTA board members to further discuss and plan the new Washington Science Teacher’s Association Journal.
How did your team address pedagogy, content, the process of science, and the use of technology during the session? We're really thinking a lot about how to support science teachers throughout Washington with this publication. We're recruiting expert writers who can address all of these pieces, and trying as well to interview "real" teachers about what they know and what they need.
