Steven Borneman
What is your role within your team?
With Dick Cizenski and Karyn Church, my role is two-fold:
> guiding the improvement of our science fair and helping with student ideas
> bringing the sixth grade science program "in line" with middle and high school programs. This includes increasing the number of labs and inquiry learning that occurs.
With Steve Borneman, my role really was as a mentor. Steve is new to teaching, but not new to research. He had no teaching experience, and did not even student teach. We spent a lot of time throughtout the year discussing every aspect of the teaching process. This year he has moved to high school chemistry, but the process continues as we collaborate on bringing graduate students to present their research to my high school research students. This has been very productive.
What professional growth goals do you and your team members hope to reach through this partnership?
An improved science fair.
A cohesive 6-8, 6-12 science program.
Success as a middle school or high school teacher (Steve).
Improvement in the offerings to high school research students--this also will result in better communications between school and University staff.
How will you and your team reflect on these goals and on learning and classroom practice (e.g., pedagogy, the use of technology, content, the process of science)?
No set "review" scheduled. There is an ongoing interaction about "how things are going." There is one exception to this--department meetings. They are not, however, specifically designed to address only mentoring/collaborative efforts.
Mentoring Plan (Revised from Orientation)
The addition of Steve Borneman is the most important addition to the plan.
