NSF PRESS RELEASE:

RESEARCHERS TO DISCUSS "HISTORIC" JOINT NSF AND COAST GUARD ARCTIC EXPEDITION

For decades, the floor of the Arctic Ocean has remained one Earth's last unexplored oceanic frontiers. This summer, a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research team aboard the USCGC Healy, the U.S. Coast Guard's newest icebreaker exceeded their most ambitious hopes for mapping the ocean floor of the Arctic and revealing some of the geological and biological secrets of the underwater Gakkel Ridge.

"This was an incredibly successful maiden voyage for Healy that exceeded all expectations in every department," said NSF lead scientist Peter Michael, of the University of Tulsa.

Scientists, NSF and Coast Guard representatives, and a clasroom teacher who sailed with and assisted the science party will discuss the highlights of Healy's maiden voyage at the National Press Club on Nov. 28.

Despite scientific opinion to the contrary, the science party -- which in addition to Michael, included researchers from Columbia University, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the University of Oregon, and Moss Landing Marine Laboratory -- discovered possible evidence of hydrothermal activity along the Arctic's Gakkel Ridge; dredged up sponges and other marine life that previously was not known to surive in the frigid Arctic waters; and used sonar to map the ridge at a level of detail that was not thought possible aboard a working icebreaker.
