27 December, 2001Question of the day: What is the size of Antarctica? a. one and half times the size of the US b. more than twice the size of the US (Answer appears at the end of today's journal entry. It's a Case of "Hurry up and wait!" It was good to sleep in a real bed last night. My new roommate is Jill from the ship, Polar Star. She has been at sea studying marine organisms for the last two weeks. She is on her way to a new deployment. I am scheduled to leave at 1am on December 28. She is scheduled to leave at 1am on December 29. Because we have only this day to air out our tents, clean our gear, turn in our gear, sort our retro trash, pack our personal bags, etc., it is a very busy day. We must also report for "bag drag" at 10am. Everything we plan to bring onboard the C-150 to New Zealand must be checked in and weighed. This means we also have to be weighed-in wearing our ECW gear. Rush, rush, rush! But we're ready! We are to report at 10:30pm for our 1am flight to Christchurch. At 9:40, I tear apart my bed, leave the linens in the pillowcase outside my door (as instructed), and rush to turn in my key. Ralph is on his way to help carry my stuff. Surprise! As I try to turn in my key, I'm told that our flight has been cancelled due to a solar flare cutting off communication between the plane and MacOps. We're rescheduled for 1am the *next* day. Looks like it will be another day in McMurdo for us. It's a case of "Hurry up and wait!" But, that's fine with me . . . more time to explore! Answer to today's "Question of the day": The answer is both "a" and "b".
