This Adelie is crossing the electronic weighbridge to go search for food. When a penguin crosses, it first trips a light sensor which turns on the battery to the electronic balance. The hoop that the penguin passes detects a tiny magnetic bar code that identifies the individual penguin. As the penguin crosses the weighbridge, its weight, the time, and the bird's identity are recorded by a computer stored in a nearby tent. The whole system is powered by a photovoltaic solar panel. When the bird returns, the weight gain or loss and the trip time can be determined.
