27 January, 2000
We spent today on the Coast Guard icebreaker travelling to Beaufort Island. We have several birds with radio transmitters in the colony and an electronic scanner that tracks and records their comings and goings.
While on the icebreaker, I saw a single Emperor penguin. During January, the Emperors leave the rookieries and head for the pack ice, often far from shore.
