Hook
Sea ice is frozen ocean water forming in high latitudes. It is floating on the seawater on which it forms and is commonly just a few meters thick.

The predictable yearly formation of polar sea ice is recognized to be crucial to oceanic circulation, biological viability of seawater and the heat budget of the earth. Recent changes in the extent and thickness of polar sea ice are an indicator and a cause of changes in planetary systems.
