24 November, 1996Today we spent touring the nearby town of Akaroa, New Zealand. Navigating the twisting highway on the opposite side of the road from in the U.S. was a challenge at times for Tom. We took a wonderful tour of the harbor by boat in which we saw Henkley's dolphin, one of the smallest in the world. They would come right up to the boat and swim alongside. We also saw many different types of nesting seabirds including one type of penguin found in New Zealand, the little blue. There was also a salmon farming operation going on in the harbor. We are packing up this evening for our departure for the ice tomorrow. We are scheduled to leave for the Antarctic Center at 6:00 in the morning, our flight is leaving at 9:00 AM.
