Hook
Since "ice" is one of the first things to come to mind when thinking about Antarctica, it is only natural to use this interest to spark students’ learning. It is important for students to "do" science, build connections to other disciplines, develop thinking skills, and take measurements to collect and record data. Investigative science reinforces the notion that science is "applied math". In doing so, students begin to understand why they need math, as well as how to apply the skills being taught. As students use various measuring devices, they begin to make the connection between school and life. As they do science, they begin to form their own questions, which encourages students to investigate and to discover new learning.
