Although this has little to do with my upcoming Antarctic research trip, it
does have to do with introducing students to research themselves. About a
year ago, I received a grant from the Douglas County Educational Foundation
to introduce my students to astrophotography. Through the process of
experimentation, trial & error, my students and I went to work to create
the best astrophotographs possible. With the grant, we purchased a
Celestron 8" Schmitt-Cassegrain telescope and a Pentax ZX-M manual SLR
camera. On several cold but clear Colorado nights, we took pictures of
various celestial objects including the moon, constellations, and nebulae.
