DAY 5: Friday August 15th, 2003

Awoke to right whales again this morning. I slept through one that was apparently itching itself on the side of the ship.

Processed a lot of chlorophyll samples this morning and early afternoon. I could have helped Nancy at 3 ish but I was wiped. She explained five times what she was doing, but very fast, and my brain just couldn't get it. I decided I was wiped and needed a nap. (I should also explain that there were two other grad students assigned to the chlorophyll station. however, after the first day we needed Andrew to read the fluorometer. This was good with him as he will need to do this for his thesis. The other wasn't much help at all. In fact it was easier to work without him. He was often the brunt of jokes as we never saw him all day long. Grad students have to do a cruise but I'm sure as hell would have a hard time counting this for him unless you counted watching movies until 4 am and sleeping the day away. ) Had a snooze while the ship finished the Alexandrium station. Had great fish and chips for supper. No whales tonight even though we were back at that station.

Ran a few more chlorophyll samples. If I wanted to stay up I could be looking for animals from the MOCNESS two, however, looking for animals requires training and I think the grad students should be learning these things. I am looking forward to whales in the morning.
