Sinop, Turkey
Dr. Ballard announced that we will get permission to leave port today after the local Governor and press tour the vessel and a press conference is given.
Herc was pulled from the water and the ship made ready. Around 4 pm. the Governor arrived and the tour started. Cameras were everywhere and everyone was smiling, handshaking all around.
I'm happy that the expedition is finally back on track, but disheartened that I will not be going with them. This is my last day on board the Knorr. I am now to return to the U.S. and work the other end of the communications network at the Coastal Institute in Rhode Island. I stayed on board as long as possible. I know I'm going to miss this crew.
After a few more minor delays, the Knorr finally left Sinop around 10:30 pm. I had the honor of being the person to cast off the last lines to the pier and free them to continue the expedition.
