July 21, 2008 Since low tide was at 6:30 we were up and ready to leave by 6:00 a.m. Today we went to another beach not far from where we were yesterday. Again we put on our gear and headed down a short cliff to reach the beach. Dr. Joe wanted us to continue collecting all three different types of fish. We noticed that we were not finding as many fish under the rocks at this beach. Also, some of these rocks were really large, like boulders. Daphne and I tried to pick some of them up, but they were just too heavy for us. The guys, Andrew and Peter, had to handle these big rocks. After two hours of turning over rocks, we finally gave up and headed back to the van. We were able to collect some specimens, but not as many as yesterday. I think we collected about 7 females. We headed back to our dorms and quickly fell asleep to prepare for the second experiment that night. After our group dinner we went back to the marine lab. That night none of the females that we collected responded to the correct prompt. Again, Dr. Sisneros dissected those fish to verify gender and whether or not they had eggs. |
