July 3, 2007 I worked with Elinor and Signe this morning. The ROV was deployed at 11:30 pm. It takes two hours for it to reach the bottom. We all sat in the conference room on the fifth deck watching the ROV descend. I was amazed at the zooplankton at a depth of 8000 feet. There was a lot of marine snow so that is what they eat. Once again textbook knowledge goes out of the window. However, there was a communication problem between the ship and the ROV so it had to be brought back up before the dive was finished. At the chief scientists meeting we were informed that this was the deepest dive that an ROV had ever undertaken on a Norwegian ship. Tomorrow the focus will once again be on the CTD and its sensors. |
