August 11, 2007 Up at 5:30 and helping Greg and Klaus load up the zodiac. They went out on an incredibly calm sea, flat and glass-like in the pastel colors of dawn. Hardly anyone was about that early and all was quiet. It was surreal. I collected samples from the rosette cast and got the lab set up for the day's work. I ate a quick breakfast and began to filter. After a few hours Greg popped in and offered to help. We filtered together for 2 hours and then went upstairs with Klaus to have lunch in the Officer's Mess. "Fine Dining" as Klaus calls it, we have our orders taken and are served. After lunch I collected samples from the Engine Room and spent the afternoon filtering in the lab. Before supper I took another sample and spent a few minutes sitting alone on the Heli-deck. It is hard to find any quiet on the ship, but this tends to be where I go when I need fresh air or a few minutes to myself. It's usually deserted in the evening. On a ship that is only so large, a feeling of "aloneness" is a rare and valuable thing! |
