A Quick Tour of Costa Rica

Today, Mandy, Dr. Pockalny and I had a quick breakfast then caught a taxi out to Puntarenas, two hours west of San Jose. The countryside is beautiful: volcanoes loom over coffee plantations, deep canyons are cut by blue rivers, and the flowers! They are everywhere. The plants are not unfamiliar, most of them are grown as houseplants in the US.

We got to our hotel, looked out the window and there was the R/V Knorr in the bay. It is a beautiful ship. After lunch, we caught a small boat that took us out to the ship. Dr. Steven D'Hondt gave Mandy and I a tour of the ship's labs and quarters. He gave us an overview of where we would be working and what we would be doing. We met many of the other science and ship crew.
