Whoa, What a Wave!

Today is our last day surveying near Wosnesenski Island. The seas are between four and six feet, which is extremely rough on the launch. One launch was hit so hard by a swell that the sonar equipment on the hull was knocked completely off!

Beyond the rough water, it was a windy day with beautiful scenery. We finished what turned out to be a "giant" polygon and headed in early due to no ocean condition reprieve in sight.

Once all of the launches were loaded we headed back to Kodiak. We stopped along the way and some of the crew and officers went fishing. I've always known that Alaska has big sea creatures, but the link cod, black sea bass and halibut that were caught were huge! From our fishing locale it was another half day back to Kodiak, a short stop for re-fueling and finally right back to the same pier that we departed from. In all, it was a fantastic experience and a great time! Thank you ARMADA Project and NOAA for this fantastic opportunity!
