January 18, 2007 Yesterday, for a second time, a piston core was lost when the cable broke. This meant that we had to use the trigger core and other coring tools as replacements to collect samples at site 11 and site 12 (our last site). The biggest impact on operations is, because the trigger core is shorter, more time had to be devoted to sending and retrieving cores. Samples were recovered however and we are now in route to site 12. Gale force winds came up last night and the ship was locked down. Today, the seas are a little calmer but again several scientists are down with sea sickness. Hopefully it will get better soon. |
