December 23, 2006 We are near our 2nd site but, at this time, it is not anticipated that coring will take place until late this evening. The ocean bottom is being surveyed carefully to ensure the site is fully identified. Technicians are busy getting lander and coring tools ready. Chemist, biologist, and other members are finishing up samples from the first site. My assignment today will be to finish titration and measurement of chlorine in the sediments. Within the lab we will also be completing tests for sulfates, nitrates, and alkalinity. I took time today to prepare a 10inch block of Styrofoam for attachment to the multi-core lander. Depth, Carroll HS, and date were written on the block. I am interested in seeing it when it is returned to the surface early tomorrow morning. |
